I write a lot of fiction with very dubious consent issues. I write a lot in the ABO trope. And I am getting really, really sick of people who don't read the tags and then feel entitled to write attacking comments.
I just got this beauty.
now, I am generally pretty laid back at responding to this sort of stuff. But honestly? I am getting really, really sick of it. This is the reply I am working on:
Yep, I am totally using a lot of the misogynistic tropes in this story. It is one of the things I like in the abo verse.
You don't like the story, and that is fine. You obviously have a lot of issues with the content. That, I think is more unreasonable. You chose to read it, when I tagged in, what I believe, is an appropriate manner. To cut directly from above:
omega verse consent issues
dub con
previous non con
shaming due to status
Public Sex
Spanking
Domestic Discipline
Collars
leashing
consensual power exchange within an lack of consent environment
Marking
Kneeling
omega/sub dynamics
corner time
lack of autonomy
Crying Dean
Discipline
Light Dom/sub
And the statement at the end " I really, really hope that this story is just your kink fantasies, and you don’t actually believe women should be treated this way in real life" is just plain rude. I don't believe that women should be treated like that. But all women are entitled to their fantasies - whether they are socially acceptable or not. And I am writing fiction about relationships between fictional characters who live in an even more fictionalised world. As far as I am aware, vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural creatures don't exist in this world, and in writing about them I don't wish that they did exist.
There is pretty much nothing in this story that has anything to do with reality... That's the awesome thing about fantasy.
So I am sorry you read a story that you didn't like, and can only recommend that you carefully read the tags in the future.
Is it too bitchy? Am I being unreasonable?
I am just getting so fucking sick of people not reading tags and attacking me for things they don't like in a story. If I have an issue with a theme? I click the back button, even if it wasn't really tagged for. Grrrrr. People can be so annoying.

Date: 2014-07-19 06:49 pm (UTC)Tags are there for a reason. It's obvious from the outset what your fic entails. Why people insist on reading stories just to lambast the author I have no idea. If the story isn't your cup of tea; don't read it. It really is very simple.
As a writer you are entitled to create the world you want; that's the joy of fiction. Just because you're character does something doesn't mean that you personally condone it or recommend it. I think some people get writers confused with the character's they write about.
As far as their last comment goes, it's ridiculous and rude. I wonder how many a/b/o fics the reader has read and why she continues to read them if her feelings on the subject are so strong. A/b/o fics tend to be full of consent issues; mine certainly are. And the ones I enjoy reading are. Are my views on women's rights set in the middle ages. NO, as my husband and children will readily attest to. Your reader has issues, but they are really not your problem.
For the record; I love your fic. I did comment on your last chapter but I'll say it again; I love it. It's hot first of all - hello spanking - and the CONSENSUAL domestic discipline kind of relationship they have going on works for them both. I'm looking forward to the next chapter.

Date: 2014-07-20 02:23 am (UTC)My stories fall very firmly into two camps: dub con/power dynamics, and fluff. And comments like this make me feel bad about writing, even though I know their comment is about them and not me.
and thanks! I am glad you are enjoying it!

Date: 2014-07-19 08:35 pm (UTC)They're probably someone who has just stumbled across ABO for the first time ever but I hate it when people feel the need to complain about the subject of a story when it's clearly labelled. It's even worse how they imply you have the same beliefs as the ABO society.
I don't think you're being too harsh. I would just slap them with a 'Depiction =/= endorsement' reply as well.

I think your response is well thought out and honestly, more polite than they deserve.

Date: 2014-07-20 03:55 am (UTC)most people have been pretty nice, but then most people read the freaking tags! I had the exact same issue with the last story, except there were stacks more people up in arms. I have just reached my limit, y'know?
thank you <3<3
